Chapter 22

Draven

A knock at the door pulled my head up. Talia stood there, leaning against the doorway to my study.

“Where’s Lyric?” I barked.

I’d left her with Leeta’s team to get food from the common area, asking Talia and Phalen to keep an eye on her. I wanted Lyric to have a chance to get to know some of the Shadows. That particular group of females was one the most respected, and I hoped my little she-demon would find some common ground with them. I’d come in here to hide out and give Lyric a little time to mingle without my influence.

“She’s eating, though she didn’t opt to sit with any Shadows. Honestly, I doubt any invited her to. She scared the shit out of half your army today.”

“Tell me someone’s watching her.”

Talia came in and took the seat across from my desk. “She’s fine. Both Cas and Phalen are in the mess hall right now. Besides, I have a feeling she can handle herself. All the talk all day long has been about what she did today, to Lyson. Then Jessop. Cas. The males are half in love with her. Well, not Jessop, of course, but the rest seem to adore her. She’s a warrior’s wet dream.”

I laughed at her spot-on assessment. Talia was typically blunt, a trait I appreciated because it showed her honesty. Her face turned serious.

“You marked her,” she stated. She wasn’t referring to the symbol I’d imprinted onto the members of my army.

“You noticed.”

“I’m not the only one who’s noticed. You might have an uprising on your hands.”

“That’s not funny.”

“No, it’s not. But I can name at least ten females who will be sick with jealousy when they find out.”

“All Shadow demons know the score when it comes to mating. Sometimes our spirits do what they want and there’s no stopping it.”

“Yeah, but the reality of you being off the market will hit hard. Not that you’ve been with anyone in months.”

“A year.”

“Pardon?”

“I haven’t been with anyone since just before the last solstice. It didn’t feel right.”

Talia flinched. “No wonder your soul is acting so rash. You’re a demon, Draven. Your body won’t take kindly to the denial of its cravings.”

My head shook. “I didn’t suffer any cravings. Not until Lyric came out of the crossing yesterday.”

“That’s unheard of.”

“I know.”

I leaned back in my chair, thrumming my fingers on the armrests. Discussing my sex life was not something I was interested in doing. Looking down, I wished I had some paperwork on the desk to distract me.

“How did she react?” Talia delved, not letting the subject go.

I could cut her off or get her take on things. Perhaps a female perspective would help.

“She doesn’t know what it means,” I professed.

“Why not?”

“Because Gabrian raised her. I can only assume she’s not been around any soul-bonded couples. I’m not aware of any within his fighting units. He even went so far as to tell her the mark of the double daggers meant death. She accused me of marking her for death and I told her it meant she was mine until death.
